Nonprofit 101: Increasing your visibility

Lets face it, when it comes to the World Wide Web, you may be competing with thousands if not more nonprofits that share your same goals.

Or, if you are a unique organization, like IMDSA is, and are the only one to serve your targeted community, it may be just as difficult to get more visibility in a search engine just because of all the tiny blips of information out there about the community you serve.

Just for mosaic Down syndrome alone, you enter a search and you will receive 907,000 links for that topic in the Yahoo search engine. Mosaic Down syndrome is rare! Imagine if I put in Down syndrome or even Autism, my organization may never come into visibility!

However, years ago one of our board members went to a meeting about increasing your visibility to others. The information she received was valuable and her main message was, “We need a blog.”

Well, this was a few years ago and honestly I really didn’t know what a blog was nor what having one would do to increase our visibility!

So, in resistance to change, I never pursued the options or even looked into the possibilities.

Until this past May….

In May I began my first blog Mosaic Moments. In this blog I feature information on mosaic Down syndrome and Down syndrome. I talk about what is in the news and this month, because it is Down syndrome Awareness month, I am featuring a different person each day with mosaic Down syndrome or Down syndrome.

It took me a while to figure out the whole blogging world and I don’t think I have actually mastered it yet completely. However, since I have begun and I have included links to our organization’s website, we have moved up in ranks on the search engines quite quickly. Not only that, we are also able to let others know in other ways about our organization and what we have to offer.

Since my blogging began, we have increased our membership and our activity to our website. We get more phone calls on our toll free hot-line and in turn are able to help many more people!

The blog host that I use is Today.com. In addition to bringing news and information to the Internet, I actually get paid a small amount for these blogs, so this is an added bonus that you could either donate back to your organization or keep as your own pay. Today.com also offers a great networking forum where other bloggers ask questions and share information. This especially helps beginning bloggers such as myself, but even the more seasoned blogger gains more knowledge from this forum.
