Nonprofit 101: Building your Website

In this century, almost everyone has a website. It gives an individual instant access to the information that you have to provide. It allows others to know “Hey! Here I am!” And, it can connect you with those you serve in many ways without too much daily work on your end.

However, if your website is not built in a way that brings those individuals back for more, you mearley have a place card on the table instead of a centerpiece to allure them back for more information.

The very first rule in an effective website is to imagine your home page as your front door.

Your front door needs to invite visitors into your home.  At your front door you may set a few pieces of information that give a glimpse into what they will expect upon entering, and a clear path for them to enter without fear of being overloaded.

However, if your entrance is too cluttered with too much information, visitors are likely to be overloaded with that information and run in fear of being overcome and suffocated by the growing ivy of information at first glance.

An effective website needs to be easily navigated and should be self-explanatory to a new visitor. There are thousands of Free templates for you to build an affective website and even the most basic of users can figure this out and build what they need.

IMDSA’s website used to be full of too much information! Our front door was cluttered with so much contents that it was as though we could not close our door and the contents was spilling out. Now, we are confident that we have built an affective website that allures visitors to come back for more and allows new visitors to see what we have to offer without overloading them with too much information at once.

There is always room for improvement, and we are constantly looking into options that will best fit our needs and the needs of our visitors. However, knowing where we used to be and where we are now, is such a major renovation that we can be happy with the work we have done to make our front door and all our interior doors more inviting!

Having a good website is the first step in growing your nonprofit beyond your vision!
